A walk in Granada – Day two.

On the second day in Granada, I went out to take a walk by myself around the town. Masa, my friend Den’s colleague from the UN University of Peace in Costa Rica, joined me for breakfast and we decided go to the little islets in the lake just outside of Granada, formed after an eruption of the Mombacho volcano thousands of years ago.

A walk in Granada – Day one.

Founded in 1524 and referred to as the oldest European city in mainland America, Granada offers a potpourri of colours, smiles and contrasts. Walking by myself the entire day, I met with many interesting individuals, all equally open to telling me their stories and having their picture taken. Here are some glimpses from the first of my two days in Granada. Hover the photos for descriptions, click for full screen.

First day in Managua; a proper update.

So yesterday I had a hectic but very informative and efficient first day at the office.

I arrived at 9am and started off with a meeting with the representative, the deputy representative and the operations manager. Thereafter, I was toured around to meet with and get introduced to all the staff members. Slightly overwhelmed by a million faces and names, I was happy about speaking Spanish and only accidently let “obrigada” slip through three times. The Portuguese was very much present on the tip of my tounge throughout the day and it took some efort to hold it back but I felt that I will be back on Spanish ground very soon as there only is four international staff in the entire office and the working language is Spanish. Joking about the language issue, I found out that three of the internationals had been to Portuguese speaking countries before coming here and were all very familiar with the battle, we played a couple of word games, laughed and moved on.

Back in business, I was briefed on security issues and earthquake precautions, got practical information, a ton of documents to read, and a couple to sign. I went to arrange my Nicaraguan sim card and UNICEF id, made sure that my banking details in the system were updated and all the previous administrative mess was cleaned up, got my computer and email set up, received the keys to my office, looked at four different apartments, and completely forgot to eat lunch.

In the evening, we came back home and ate a nice Nicaraguan dish, worked a little, played with sweet Ayane, spoke for a couple of hours over a bottle of white wine, and decided not to go out.

A proud mother

Iina caught me taking the photo of a little girl in Changara when we were there in November last year to film for a Finnish fundraising event.

I was a facilitator, translator and reporter at once, and had a very fruitful time with the team and the people we met. The mother was one of the more interesting personalities I have met on my way, with a contagious laughter and very strong presence, she was proud of her children, proud of her house, very sharp minded and not even a tiny bit shy. An absolutely fantastic woman.

The gala and videos were aired on Finnish TV yesterday, I will share them with you if UNICEF Finland gives me the permission to do so.

Om nom nom nom Malmö

Leonie crossed the bridge yesterday to help me out with a big piece of cheescake. Later on in the evening, the girls came to hug and say goodbye at the really nice Chilout Sushi Lounge where Jesaja was playing funk beats and the baked sushi rolls were really, really, really good.

Today has been a lovely day in the sun. With more of that mind blowing cheescake from Pronto Coffeehouse. My last weekend in Malmö, I can’t believe it.

Allen Stone live @ Babel, Malmö.

Danced to the fantastic voice and souly vibes of mega-talented and charismatic Allen Stone and his band yesterday at Babel here in Malmö. Ah, the euphoria! Live music is one of my top favourite things in the world, especially when played in an intimate place like this where I can come up close, breathe the lyrics in, and dance my mind off.

Videos and photos below. Enjoy!

Oh, come on. Boost it up to 1080p HD, already!———–

And here’s an absolutely fantastic cover of Bob Marley’s “Is this love?” – it is!

If you are into soul music and ever get a chance to see this guy live, do it. It’s like getting on a ride all the way back to the golden years of Motown. Goosebumps guaranteed.
